{"id":512,"date":"2021-01-24T16:39:10","date_gmt":"2021-01-24T16:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/?page_id=512"},"modified":"2026-01-16T11:39:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T11:39:05","slug":"sjboc-moorings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/?page_id=512","title":{"rendered":"SJBOC Moorings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"clear: both;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Moorings-aerial-450-RP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"252\" \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Saul<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> Junction Boat Owners Club Ltd lease the Stroudwater Navigation towpath side moorings <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">from the Canal &amp; River Trust.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The leased area is the strip of land bordered by the canal piling and the line of eighty-one, numbered mooring posts between the Junction Bridge Keepers&#8217; Office and Walk Bridge.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">moorings<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">towpath is a <\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Permissive Path<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>It is not a &#8216;Public Right of Way&#8217;<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Canal &amp; River Trust <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>permit<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">public use of the towpath. The Canal &amp; River Trust may impose conditions on its use, as permissive paths are not public rights of way.\u00a0 This can include restrictions on when and how the public can use the path (e.g.,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">walkers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">are<\/span> allowed<\/b><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">, <strong>but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not <\/span>cyclists or horse-riders<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"clear: both; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Mooring the boats<\/span><\/strong><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-749 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Brutus-CF-450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Brutus-CF-450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Brutus-CF-450-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nSJBOC boats are moored to rings on steel posts.<br \/>\nEach mooring post is numbered.<br \/>\nMooring Post No. 1 is situated outside the Junction Bridge Keepers&#8217; Office.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Mooring Post No. 81 is at Walk Bridge, the terminus point of the SJBOC stretch.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Moorers are requested to secure <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">fenders<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"> to their boats or mooring posts.<br \/>\nNeither mooring ropes nor fenders are to be attached to the timber waling beam atop the steel piling panels.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">There are three water points along the moorings.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"clear: both; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Midway &#8211; <\/span><\/strong>No Mooring<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Saul Marina lies opposite the SJBOC moorings. <strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-762 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Stroudwater-Winding-Hole-aerial-RP-450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Stroudwater-Winding-Hole-aerial-RP-450.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Stroudwater-Winding-Hole-aerial-RP-450-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\nBoats moving to and from Saul Marina are assisted by a short &#8216;no mooring&#8217; stretch between the SJBOC boats. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">This space also creates a &#8216;winding hole&#8217; for SJBOC vessels.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The River Frome feeds the Stroudwater Navigation. <strong>Consequently, a strong current always flows to<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>wards the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal.\u00a0 Boaters<\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0leaving SJBOC Berths <em style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>and<\/strong><\/em> Marina Moorings are t<\/strong><\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">herefore <\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">asked to contact the Bridge Keeper <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/span>leaving their moorings.<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">A traffic light operated by the Bridge Keeper controls access from the Stroudwater onto the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal. <\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong style=\"color: #000000; color: #000000;\">When the Stroudwater Navigation was opened in 1779, the bridge was a regular arched structure taking a lane through a local estate. The steep approaches to that bridge created difficulties for horse-drawn loads. In 1855, the structure was rebuilt as an iron &amp; timber swing bridge. Following the canal&#8217;s closure in 1945, the swing bridge deteriorated and became unsafe. Safety was re-established by a level, fixed, iron &amp; concrete structure with a 7.5-tonne weight limit.<br \/>\nPlans and funding now exist for the construction of a Lift Bridge in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"clear: both; margin-bottom: 10px;\">\n<p style=\"clear: both; margin-top: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Moorings at Night<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"full-size wp-image-985 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Towpath-Lights-1024x613.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"253\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Solar-powered lights illuminate the moorings<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The installation was fitted by Saul Junction Boat Owners Club members.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"clear: both; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Association of Waterways Cruising Clubs<\/span><\/strong><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-673 alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saulboatclub.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AWCC-Flag-Logo-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"172\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">SJBOC is a member of the Association of Waterways Cruising Clubs.
